Background of the Study
Land conflicts have long been a contentious issue in rural areas, significantly affecting socio-economic development. In Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, disputes over land ownership and usage rights have impeded rural development initiatives (Ekong, 2023). These conflicts often arise from overlapping claims, unclear land titles, and historical grievances that hinder agricultural productivity and infrastructure development. Rural communities, which depend on land for farming and livelihood, suffer from reduced investment in local development due to persistent legal and social disputes (Madu, 2024). The ramifications of these conflicts are not only economic but also social, affecting community cohesion and stability. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of conflict resolution and land reform in fostering rural development and improving quality of life (Ifeanyi, 2025). This study examines the extent of land conflicts and their direct influence on rural development, offering a critical analysis of the socio-economic challenges in Obubra and proposing pathways for sustainable development (Ndukwe, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Obubra Local Government Area faces ongoing land conflicts that significantly disrupt rural development. The unclear demarcation of land boundaries and overlapping claims have led to disputes that impede agricultural productivity and infrastructure projects. These conflicts result in social unrest and hinder economic progress, making it difficult for communities to access necessary resources and investments. This study seeks to explore the underlying causes of these land conflicts and assess their impact on rural development in the area (Okon, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To examine the nature and causes of land conflicts in Obubra.
To assess the impact of these conflicts on rural economic and social development.
To recommend conflict resolution and land reform strategies to promote rural development.
Research Questions
What are the primary causes of land conflicts in Obubra?
How do these conflicts affect agricultural productivity and infrastructure development?
What strategies can be implemented to resolve these conflicts and enhance rural development?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: Land conflicts negatively affect agricultural productivity and rural development.
H₂: There is a significant relationship between unresolved land disputes and social instability.
H₃: Effective land reform policies can mitigate conflicts and stimulate rural development.
Significance of the Study
This study is important as it highlights the detrimental impact of land conflicts on rural development in Obubra. The findings will inform policymakers, community leaders, and legal practitioners in developing conflict resolution frameworks that foster sustainable rural growth (Udo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the impact of land conflicts on rural development within Obubra Local Government Area. Broader issues such as national land policy and long-term historical trends are not covered.
